Woodfield House is the original townland house of Ryane, some 3km north-west of Oylegate, on the river road. Originally thatched, with six bays, over 2 floors, and a hipped roof with two end chimneys, much of this 17th century farmhouse was originally of wattle and daub construction.
The traditional, wide fireplace remains at the heart of the house to this day, with an integral bread oven in situ, and many of the original doors remain intact. Substantial buttresses were added to support the front facade.
In 1831, new stone extensions had been constructed from stone sourced from a nearby quarry at Killurin. Upstairs, an altar stood in one of the rooms, used as a chapel in the penal times of the early 1800s, later to become an oratory. Later still, this same altar was donated to the school at Oylegate.
Originally part of an 800 acre estate, the property was for many generations owned by the Sutton family, with the deeds extending back as far as
1697.
Much later, at the end of the 19th century, there is some evidence of a visit by the famous designer and architect, Ms. Eileen Gray, of Brownswood.
In 1996, the house was purchased by Dick and Catriona Whelehan, and restored to the fine period property you see today.
